Since 1999, Bar Dynamite has provided an intimate, laid-back atmosphere where DJs and anyone passionate about music can gather, not just to drink and hang out, but to listen to some sophisticated sounds. Seven nights a week, some of the city’s finest DJs spin their favorite underground records, encompassing hip-hop, funk, disco, soul, Brazilian, house and down-tempo. Once you step inside the dark, candlelit room, it becomes instantly apparent that the music is valued way more than the drinking. The sound system is loud, but not too loud to prevent conversation. Even behind the bar, vintage reggae album covers hang above the liquor-lined shelves. Friends sit and chat in comfy, red vinyl booths against a colorfully painted dragon mural. Red candles decorate the bar and tables, along with red ceiling lamps, enhancing the warm, loungey ambience. Weekend nights, lines of eclectic singles who turn up their noses at the usual Gaslamp scene trail down the block, and inside the action is wall to wall.
